A Great Time in the Garden

Post by Gerard Gonzales, Outdoor Education Coordinator at Kidspace Children's Museum

Here in Southern California, we live in a Mediterranean climate. The name "Mediterranean" comes from the sea that divides Europe from Africa. The defining characteristic of this climate is hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Other areas with Mediterranean climates around the world are South Africa, Southern Australia, and central Argentina and Chile.

While many places are planting crops that will need the winter frost to flourish, we can get another full sun crop of many plants. Plus, we can plant some of the winter crops - it's the best of both!

Here in the Kidspace garden we have two little melons finally forming and on further inspection, the critters found them first. Oh - to wait all summer for a melon and, as autumn creeps in, to finally see one only to discover little teeth marks before the fruit is close to ripe.
:(

It's another good reminder: that we must do more than enough and share what we receive.
