Notes from ther EPIcenter

Post by Lauren Schuman, Operations Manager at Kidspace Children’s Museum

Did you know that Kidspace is an Earthquake EPIcenter? An Earthquake Education & Public Information Center, that is. What makes us an EPIcenter? We are part of a group of museums, science centers and libraries around the state who work together to teach people how to prepare for earthquakes and learn more about the science behind the shake.

There are lots of ways we do this. Some of the EPIcenters have quake exhibits where families can learn interactively, some host speakers and some are involved in behind the scenes planning to ensure the safety of their guests. Kidspace has three interactive exhibits about earthquakes, and we are again participating in the
Great ShakeOut.

Last year, the Great Southern California Shakeout took place in November 2008 and was the country’s largest earthquake drill ever. It was only planned as a one-time event but since it ended up being such a success, we are doing it all over again on Thursday, October 18. And this time it’s going statewide! For more info on disaster preparedness for your family, visit the Southern California Earthquake Center online.
