Confessions of an Intern

By Elvira Yanez, Early Childhood Education Intern at Kidspace Children's Museum

This summer I had the opportunity to work at Kidspace Children’s Museum as an Early Childhood Education Intern. I expected to gain a broader knowledge of ways to work directly and indirectly with children and to have the opportunity to work in an administrative setting in order to understand how Kidspace effectively runs their children programs. My expectations were definitely fulfilled - I got to see a completely different side of children’s education.

I expanded my knowledge of working with children through being an Educator on the floor every Saturday and facilitating activities such as the Bubble Show. I learned to work with children indirectly by creating curriculum for Baby & Me classes. I also got to spend enough time in the office to observe how Kidspace functions from the inside out. But the most important thing I have gained is experience and a different perspective on children’s education. Going to school and taking courses in Education exposed me to traditional childhood education. At Kidspace, however, I was introduced to childhood education through the practice of play; something a textbook would have not discussed.
